Senior Care for Pets

The golden years of your pet’s life can be difficult. Senior pets begin to experience physical, cognitive and emotional limitations due to their age. With the right care these years can be a breeze for your furry friend. Here at Golf Glen Veterinary Clinic we aim to provide the best care for senior pets in order to give them long, happy and healthy lives.

When is my pet considered a senior?

On average, cats 8 years and older are considered seniors while dogs 7 years and older are considered seniors. This is the general guideline, but your pet may be different. Our veterinarians can properly examine your pet and determine what stage of like they are in. For more information we encourage you to call us at 905.727.3003.

What are signs that my pet is getting older?

Older pets are more susceptible to illnesses and so it is very important that you pay attention to the signs of aging. Signs your pet is getting older are:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Lumps and bumps on their body
  • Difference in their hair/coat such as thinning or greying around the face
  • Less energy
  • Weight loss/gain
  • Hearing problems
  • Increase/decrease in urination, drinking or eating

What are common health issues in senior pets?

As your pet ages it is important to catch any health conditions before they become advanced. This is only achieved through regular checkups. Any illness your senior pet faces poses a risk to their life. Common illnesses in senior pets include:

  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Cancer
  • Hormone disorder
  • Kidney/ liver problems
  • Cognitive dysfunction (similar to Alzheimer’s disease in humans)

How can I care for my senior pet?

The care your senior pet needs is different to that of kittens and puppies. We advise pet owners to work with their veterinarians to determine the specific needs of their pets and how to cater to them. Our veterinarians can create a senior wellness program that includes regular examinations, nutritional plans and special exercise for your loyal companion. Our team can also identify and provide treatment for illnesses associated with aging.

Preventing and Treating Litter Box Issues

Using the litter box properly is one of the universal requirements that most cat owners have. When Kitty uses the box properly, it’s something that we don’t pay much attention to, besides the daily scooping. When there is a problem however, and Kitty has chosen a different location for his or her toileting needs, this can be a huge strain on the relationship that cats enjoy with their owners (and can result in relinquishment to a shelter or euthanasia).
